4K Camera Shootout of 2017 (Part I)

Last year we picked 4K cameras that we thought presented the most value, and then we compared them in our 4K Camera Shootout of 2016. This year, we’re back with the 2017 edition.

The three cameras featured in this video are:

  • Sony a6500
  • Panasonic GH5
  • BlackMagic URSA Mini 4.6K Pro

As you saw in the video, our winner was the Panasonic GH5.

We might do Part II of this video, since there are other interesting 4K cameras on the market, and it’s likely we’ll see new contenders before the end of the year. Please let us know which cameras you’re interested in.

Here’s Tom’s review of the GH5.

Here‘s Tom’s review of the URSA Mini 4.6K (the image quality of the Pro and this camera is the same; please watch here to hear Tom talk about the main differences between the two models of the URSA Mini 4.6K)

Here‘s Tom’s review of the Sony a6300 (a6300 and a6500 have the same sensor, so the image quality is the same; a full review of the a6500 is coming soon).

Here is where you can buy these cameras:

  1. Hello Tom
i’m going to shoot an interview with 2 cameras: main camera blackmagic design 4k camera and second camera :panasonic gh4.
i want to have a smooth final video without any difference footage of 2 cameras.

    what are my challenge ?
what is best setting on both camera on set?
what can i have to do in post production?

    and what is your tips?
    Thank you

  2. Nice take on the comparison. I would want all 3 cameras for different reasons.

What I like about your site is that you know how light a scene and have
great composition skills. Plus a great handle on the post side with the ability to see the big picture in all aspects.

Practical advice presented in a great way.
    Keep up the good work!

    Mark

  3. Very instructional. You opened my eyes on what to look for when purchasing a camera. Just a newbie and was already considering the Panasonic GH5. However, the sony autofocus is a great feature for someone like me.

    Thank you so very much

  4. All comparison videos are ideal conditions. Reality is not so like that. I have a Blackmagic production camera 4k, Blackmagic cinema camera, Blackmagic pocket camera and the sony a6500.

Personally the all-terrain is BMPPC, 3 years after I work with this camera.

    Low-light situations BMCC
Sony a6500 in controlled light situations without much dynamic range
shadows and color temperature better day than artificial.

The balckmagic production camera 4k with the global shutter, loses several steps of light .. only for light day ceremonies.

    Sorry my bad english.

  5. can you tell me your take on a Sony Fs5 4K also can I use it for Netflix submission. I am In Film School The Los Angeles Film School and they provided me this camera package.
