DIY Custom Camera Rig for $200

I built a custom camera rig for my DSLM using various parts I found on Amazon. It costs just $200 and fixes the main problems I find with many DLSR/DSLM style cameras. My custom rig turns any DSLR / DSLM camera into a proper video production tool.

Main problem with using these small cameras is that there is no way to attach any accessories like microphones, lights, monitor etc. So I fix that problem first by putting a cage around my camera with various attachments.

The next problem is the bad battery life that many of these cameras have. I attach a battery plate that accepts bigger and cheaper Sony NP-F style battery and then connect that to a dummy battery which I put inside my camera.

Another problem is the lack of professional audio connections which is easily fixed with the Saramonic SmartRig+. This audio mixer allows me to connect two phantom powered pro XLR microphones or two 3.5mm mics. It also allows me to monitor the audio with headphones and easily adjust the audio levels with physical knobs.

This setup will work great for many different cameras such as Sony A7sII / a6300 / a6500, Panasonic GH4 and other similar cameras in size and function.

  1. The Vitrox cage no longer seems to be available anyplace. Do you have a recommendation that would be a suitable substitute?
