Portable Audio Recorders for Filmmakers

For years, the Zoom H4 has been the workhorse audio recorder on my film and video productions. As good as it is, it is an older model, and so I decided to see what the current portable recorders have to offer. Here is my review of three popular recorders from Zoom and Tascam.

Here is where you can get these recorders:

Zoom H5 on BH Photo Video, Adorama, Henry’s, eBay, Amazon, Amazon Canada, Amazon UK, Amazon Germany

Zoom H6 on BH Photo Video, Adorama, Henry’s, eBay, Amazon, Amazon UK, Amazon Canada, Amazon Germany

Tascam DR-40 on BH Photo Video, Adorama, eBay, Amazon, Amazon UK, Amazon Canada, Amazon Germany

If you’d like more information about my current audio set-up with the Rode NTG 4+ shotgun mic, you can find it here.

  1. Another audio recorder you should check out is the SoundDevices MixPre-3. It is very compact and can be mounted directly beneath your DSLR. There are 3 XLR inputs and the Kashmir pre-amps are excellent. For me I like the form factor, the gain/fader controls and especially the touch display. You can run the audio from the MixPre to your camera for a pretty decent scratch track and the unit records to a SD card. I would recommend getting the 8 AA battery sled to get more recording time.
