Blackmagic Design has just released another camera. That’s right. The successor or upgrade or simply a companion to the very popular Pocket 4K camera but now in 6K!
So what’s the biggest difference with the new Pocket 6K camera? The resolution of course is the first thing you’ll notice. Yes it shoots in 6K up to 50 frames per second but also in so many other formats. Camera can shoot in all standard resolutions and frame rates from HD up to DCI 4K and 6K. You can also shoot still photos at 21.2 megapixels. When it comes to the frame rates it will shoot up to 50 fps at 6144 x 3456 (16:9) or 60 fps at 6144 x 2560 (2.4:1) and 60 fps at 5744 x 3024 (17:9). For higher frame rates you can window the sensor and shoot up to 120 fps at 2.8K 2868 x 1512 (17:9). You can even work in true anamorphic 6:5 aspect using anamorphic lenses in 3.7K 60 fps at 3624 x 3020 resolution.
You can get the new camera right now from B&H Photo Video and Adorama.
Another big difference with the Pocket 6K camera is the lens mount and image sensor. The camera now has a Super 35mm image sensor and a very popular Canon EF mount. This will make it a great camera addition to any Canon shooter. It means you can use that huge array of already available Canon EF glass plus you will be able to get a shallower DOF much easier than you can with the Pocket 4K camera. The new sensor is 12.99mm tall by 23.1mm wide.
To accomodate for the new mount and sensor you will notice that the camera’s front seems to stick out a bit more than the Pocket 4K.
Otherwise the new Pocket 6K camera is identical to the Pocket 4K. So if you watched my review of the BMPCC4K or if you had a chance to use it and loved it but wanted that bigger sensor then the new Pocket 6K is your choice. Just like the Pocket 4K it has the same great menu system, the same button layout and nice bright 5 inch display in the back. Also it shoots in the same codecs including BRAW. It also have the same great dynamic range and recording media option such as SD cards, Cfast 2.0 cards and external SSD via the USB-C connection. There are a lot of amazing features that the Pocket 4K camera has and why I use it almost everyday, so it’s great to see Blackmagic give this already great camera a new option with the new sensor and mount.
Looking at the speed that Blackmagic Design is releasing new products, most importantly cameras it is easy to assume they will have another one in a few months. Specially considering that they have yet to fill all the orders of the previous Pocket 4K. It stands to reason that they will most likely be announcing another camera come NAB in April 2020. My good friend and a talented filmmaker Tim Wilson says that he thinks they will most likely release another version of the URSA Mini Pro G2 but one that can shoot in higher resolutions and frame rates. Maybe 8K at 120 frames per second? Haha… hey I can dream! Another interesting thing that Tim mentioned is that the new Pocket 6K is now the cheapest camera that fits the requirements by Netflix to be used on one of their film productions. This means that indie filmmakers can use it as a main camera and still have higher chances of selling their films to Netflix, while big Hollywood productions can use this as a B-Camera for action or crash cam angles since it’s so cheap.
Of course the new camera wasn’t the only thing that Blackmagic announced. You can watch the full live announcement on the Blackmagic Design’s YouTube video below.
By the way during today’s announcement Grant Perry, CEO of Blackmagic Design did mention a lot of great updates for the Pocket 4K which also includes the new anamorphic shooting mode. Plus a few other cool recording options and features such as the camera level display which makes leveling your camera very easy. Those will be coming to the Pocket 4K in a future firmware update. Also, if you are still waiting for your order of the Pocket 4K camera but need it ASAP then if you can, cancel your order and buy it straight from one of the sellers on eBay that do have the camera in stock. I’m pretty excited about this announcement. I’m looking forward to your hands on review.
I am supposed to get the camera any minute… will let you know what I think.
YES!!!!☺️
Black Magic lives up-to it’s name!
Haha! That is true.
Wow.. I’m still stuck on wanting buy the GH5… But damn!
Me too… I was about to buy the GH5 and the universe said…. Hold on! I have more anxiety for you!
Haha… yup that’s how it works. Plus there will be more cameras coming out for Black Friday, then Christmas and next year…
Hehe ludzie jeszcze czekają na Pocket 4k a tu już 6k!
Wygląda to zachęcająco! Nikt narazie nie oferuje takich możliwości w tej cenie! Coś mi sie wydaje że nawet Sony A7S III tego nie przebije. 6k raw? 2.8K 120fps? Anamorphic itd? Za 2500 dolców? NIe ma szans!
Pozdrawiam 🙂
So, should I toss my BMPCC4K, and get the 6K?
Depends if you want the 6K resolution or the bigger sensor or Canon EF mount. It’s your decision. The 4K version might be better if you have M43 lenses and prefer that format.
Hi, how do you think, will be possible to use M42 lenses with adapter on This camera EF mount ? For example Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 ? Thanks
Not possible to use M42 lenses on EF mount. I haven’t seen an adapter for it.
what about these ? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pixtic-Adaptor-Mounting-Cameras-Infinity/dp/B00EU71E68/ref=sr_1_45?keywords=m42+to+canon+ef&qid=1565810195&s=gateway&sr=8-45 my friend using it without any problems on RED Scarlet and Helios M42 lens. m42 lenses are my favorites, would be nice to have on bmpcc6k.
Can I shoot 6k HDR videos on pocket 6k camera if so then how?
