Nikon Buys Red Cameras!

In one of the least expected camera news, Red Digital Cinema has been acquired by Nikon.

I have over the years wondered if Red would be able to survive in a very competitive camera manufacturer market, specially considering their niche clients and the size of other big camera companies. In fact I suspected they will sell their company at some point (although I thought it would be much sooner) but to a bigger and more established company such as Canon. Well it turns out that Nikon has reached a deal to buy out Red. What will happen next is anyone’s guess. Will the Red cameras be merged with Nikon tech into a new breed of cameras like a “Nikomodo”?

Perhaps Red will still be run separately from Nikon but will benefit from the big budget and manufacturing capabilities of Nikon to produce more and cheaper cinema Red cameras. It would seem to me that it would benefit Nikon to keep the brand name of Red cameras but mass deliver it to a wider range of customers. Let me know what you think will happen next?
