Nikon Z 6 Filmmaker’s Kit

If you are interested in full frame RAW video recording with a lens and gimbal kit for under $3800 then you should look at the Nikon’s Z 6 Filmmaker’s kit.

Check out my video below if you want to see examples of the video quality you can expect from the Nikon Z6 when it is paired with an Atomos external recorder.

So first let me talk about the Nikon Z6 itself. Is it good or bad? Overall it’s great! Of course it’s not perfect. I like that Nikon finally stepped up to the plate of full frame video in a DSLR and not only hit a run but a home-run. The Nikon Z6 is the first DLSR that offers full frame video without the limiting 8 bit codecs that Canon and Sony offer. When you connect the Z6 to an external recorder like the Atomos Shogun Inferno or Ninja V you can actually record 10bit video in N-Log. Soon with a future updated (expected anytime during the summer of 2019) you will even be able to record 12bit RAW video in ProRes RAW format. Amazing! It also offers great in body image stabilized sensor. Pretty good auto focus. The camera has a few other great things about it which I will leave for the full review of it but what are the negatives? Not much bad I can say about it. It’s a DSLR which comes with both good and bad. I think for me the biggest negative about this camera is that it’s auto focus is good but only when recording in the standard video profiles. If you turn on N-Log and try using the AF then the camera can sometimes struggle focusing. Which for me is a big pain in using this camera specially when it’s ontop of the Moza Air 2 gimbal which comes included with the filmmaker’s kit. I hope they can fix that with a firmware upgrade since the Nikon Z7 doesn’t have that problem.
