DJI just announced the Zenmuse X7 camera, an update to their successful X5 gimbal camera. The X5 worked great with the DJI Inspire 2 drone and the DJI Osmo handheld gimbal.

The Zenmuse X7 takes things even farther by up-sizing from the Micro Four Thirds image sensor and 4K RAW video to the Super 35mm sensor and 6K RAW. The X7 also improves the dynamic range to 14 stops of light.

The X7 also introduces the DL-Mount. This new lens mount has been created for aerial photography and it provides a super short flange distance, making the camera smaller than cameras of similar quality.

The reason why the X5 camera had the M43 image sensor had a lot to do with lenses. In order to get the DJI Inspire drone up in the air safely and with sufficient battery life, the lenses had to be small and light. SO, DJI had decided on the M43 mount as the best choice in terms of lens quality and size.

In order to bring the Super 35mm image sensor to their Inspire drones, DJI had to create new lenses. The result of this is a set of prime lenses that are sharp, fast (f/2.8), but also small and light – a combination of qualities not seen before.

The lenses are available in focal lengths of 16mm, 24mm, 35mm and 50mm. The 35mm lens weighs only 182 g (6.4 oz), and the other ones even less.

Another great feature are built-in ND filters on the 16mm prime lens. These filters are controlled via the DJI app when flying the drone or using the OSMO gimbal.

The other three lenses still allow attaching the same ND filters that worked with the X5.
