Panasonic GH5 camera review

GH5 Review! My rig, lenses & custom settings

My full review of the Panasonic GH5 is finally here. I know I’m late to the party, but this gave me more time to use the camera – and hopefully made my review better.

Without further ado, here is the review

As I mention in the video, I will be sharing my custom camera settings. These will be available… UPDATE: get my GH5 custom settings and LUT here.

So, what do I think of the GH5 after using it for three months? It’s great and nearly perfect.

The things I like about this little camera are:

  • Size of the camera
  • Menu and custom settings
  • Custom buttons
  • Great EVF and even better LCD
  • Amazing 10bit video quality
  • slow motion at 180fps in HD and 60fps in 4K
  • Audio connection options
  • Waveform included
  • Anamorphic 4K mode in 60fps
  • Battery life
  • Full size HDMI connection
  • in-body image stabilization

What are the things that I don’t like about this camera?

    There are only two things:

  • the autofocus sucks
  • LOG image profile is not included

The bad things aren’t that bad for me, since I almost never use AF.

As for the LOG image profile / V-Lof L (as Panasonic calls it), you can still get it for an extra $100. What I don’t like, though, is how they implemented it. To get the LOG profile, you have to buy it online and wait for a piece of paper with the code to be delivered via standard mail.

Why? Have you ever heard of email, Panasonic!?

Once you have the code, you have to go back online to the Panasonic website to register the profile and download the firmware upgrade.

Next time, Panasonic, please just let people buy it online, right within the camera’s menu. Simple!

Otherwise, this little camera is great. Amazing quality with amazing pro tools – all for under $2K.

Here is where you can get the camera and all the other gear that I mention in the video:

Here is a test of the autofocus – it includes tips and explains when you can – and when you absolutely cannot – rely on the AF on the GH5.

Here is a cinematic test I shot on the GH5 and anamorphic lenses

  1. I’m one of the lucky people who basically got my GH5 last year for a special price because I took advantage of Best Buy’s “accessory” deal (A ZHIYUN Crane 2). $1600 in fact. Does it make sense for me to stick with the GH5 and buy a fast Pana lens say 1.4 to 1.7 for low light (I have a 12-35 Pana Zoom at f2.8) for over $500, OR sell my GH5 and kick in $500 more and get a GH5s? People are saying the GH5s is only giving you a stop to a stop+1/2 greater sensitivity, anyway. Wouldn’t faster lenses do the same thing for the GH5?

  2. I’ve been enjoying the GH5 so much. The sensor stabilization combined with prime lenses is amazing.
Check out the Mitakon 25mm 0.95 lens, it is truly amazing in low light.
