Sony a6300 camera review

Thanks to B&H Photo Video, I finally got my hands on the highly anticipated Sony a6300. This DSLM camera offers great specs despite being priced as a budget model – just under $1000 for the body.

So far, I have used the camera casually, while on vacation, and have to say that I love it. For the price, you are getting a great camera for home videos and family photos, but it is also a great option for filmmakers – the video quality is the same as on the Sony a7S II. Once I have a chance to use it on a project, I will make a more in-depth review geared towards professional users, so stay tuned.

Here are some of the key points from my review:

    The good:

  • Records 4K video
  • Amazing EVF
  • LCD can display 120 fps
  • Great AF (autofocus) system
  • No overheating issues like with the a6000
  • Has S-Log2 and S-Log3 with base ISO 800
  • Shoots 11 fps full resolution photos
  • Has a mic input, which was missing on the a6000
  • Great low-light performance
    The bad:

  • Bad jello effect in 4K recording
  • Moire visible in 1080p at 120fps
  • Battery drains fast when shooting 4K video
  • No in-camera stabilization like in the Sony a7S II
  • No headphone jack like in the Sony a7S II

Here is my full video review of the Sony a6300.

I also have two test videos shot with the Sony a6300.

1080p Test at 120fps

4K Test at 24fps

You can buy the camera on B&H Photo Video, Adorama, Henry’s, eBay, Amazon, Amazon Canada, Amazon UK, Amazon Germany

I also have for you raw footage from the camera that you can download and test for yourself (by color grading it, for example). Here are the download links:

4K 24fps Cine1
1080p 120fps Cine1
4K 24fps SLOG3

If you want to adapt non-Sony lenses to this camera, you have many choices. Here are my top picks for adapting Canon lenses (i.e. Canon EF or Canon EF-S Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount)

My favorite lens adapter with wireless focus and iris control

Smart Adapter for Canon EF or Canon EF-S Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount

A good inactive adapter from Vello – Canon EF/EF-S lens to Sony E-Mount lens adapter

The cheap inactive adapter I show in the video (Canon EF/EF-S to Sony E-Mount)

You can also find many Canon EF Lens to Sony E-Mount adapters on eBay and Amazon.
